On Saturday, August 11th, we’re partnering with Cleveland Elementary to highlight and support their Ecoliteracy program. This program aims to help students develop a close relationship with the natural world as they learn about growing and preparing food, environmental science, pollution and waste reduction, habitat protection, and teamwork.
From 12-6pm, we’re hosting an afternoon of family-friendly festivities (including a board game tournament!) complete with summery brews, including the release of one of our favorites: Strawberry Rhubarb Sour. This year’s batch is bigger and berry-ier than the last, barrel-soured and finished with strawberries, rhubarb, lemon peel, and Citra hops. It’s delightfully sour, fruity, and refreshing, like a summer cocktail. Both draft and bottles will be available on Saturday, August 11th.
Since 2009, teachers March Schriner and Sarah Stephens have led Cleveland’s ecoliteracy efforts and helped (literally) grow their outside spaces, including vegetable, redwood tree, flower and herb, and wildlife gardens. All 400 of Cleveland’s K-5th grade students spend time participating in hands-on instruction in the ecoliteracy program’s outdoor classroom and gardens. Students tend the gardens and, during four Seed to Table events throughout the school year, work with parent volunteers to harvest, prepare, and eat a healthy meal.
In addition to the gardens and educational efforts, Cleveland’s ecoliteracy program has helped institute school-wide food scrap composting, and works with students and staff to promote recycling on campus. Thanks to their work, landfill waste at Cleveland has decreased 33%, and over 50% of the school’s waste goes to compost or recycling.
