ArtSpan proudly presents Brightside, a joyful Art-In-Neighborhoods pop up exhibition celebrating the light, transformation, and energy of summertime through the eyes of five ArtSpan Artist Members. Set beneath the Ferry Building's iconic skylight, this vibrant pop-up transforms the historic Grand Hall into a gallery space alive with color, memory, and place.
This exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the glow of long summer evenings, the beauty of the season, and the many ways that art connects us to one another. Supported by the Port of San Francisco.
Each artist contributes a unique interpretation of summertime and transformation:
Christine Ong-Dijcks: Christine presents four works from her Emotions of Humanity series--paintings that convey powerful emotions through shared, everyday experiences rather than facial expressions. These scenes of teenagers leaping from cliffs, girls swinging under palm trees, and children gathered by the lake evoke joy, bliss, spontaneity, and togetherness. Rendered in bold colors, these works invite viewers to relive their own sun-soaked memories. Christine's art is driven by a desire to spread joy and share the simple beauty of life through color, humor, and warmth.
Janey Fritsche: Janey's coastal paintings explore how we reconnect with presence and joy at the seashore. Influenced by time living in Hawai'i, her work honors the ocean as refuge, teacher, and timeless inspiration. Her canvases celebrate people letting go--children playing, adults wading in waves--alongside tranquil, expansive seascapes. Her visual language speaks to impermanence, peace, and the healing power of water, encouraging viewers to return to nature and themselves.
Lisa Levine: Lisa's mixed media series PAST TENSE layers vintage photographs with contemporary imagery, creating richly textured works that tap into personal and collective memory. Her contributions to Brightside echo the colors, activities, and essence of summer, infused with a strong sense of nostalgia. Through cold wax and archival pigment prints, Lisa reimagines fleeting moments from the past to build new emotional narratives rooted in longing, place, and time.
Raymundo Valdez: Raymundo offers kaleidoscopic visions of San Francisco transformed by light and movement. Inspired by sunsets over Ocean Beach, fog wrapping city towers, and the shifting rhythm of neighborhoods, his paintings reframe urban scenes as luminous mosaics. With works like Castro Lights at Dusk and Rust Veil over Sutro Tower, Raymundo explores emotional topographies where architecture, atmosphere, and memory collide. His work celebrates the resilience and beauty of everyday places, refracted through bold geometry and vivid color.
Veronica Kovats Sánchez: Veronica's radiant paintings are a love letter to her childhood summers in Acapulco, Mexico. Embellished with symbolic detail, her works capture the freedom of sun-drenched afternoons, playful mermaid dreams, and the vivid hues of tropical sunsets. Merging oil and digital techniques, her surreal and intimate compositions invite viewers to reflect on identity, memory, and the magic of summer's embrace across borders.
