San Francisco's historic ferry building has been remodeled and is now the home of to a top-notch Farmer's Market (out on the walkway in front of the building) and is home to amazing shops, cafes, and restaurants. Ferry Plaza, immediately south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, is an open space that is often used for popup events.
Until the late 1930's when the bridges were built, the Ferry building served as the principal entry into the city. Its 240-foot clock tower, modeled after the 12th century bell tower in Seville, has been the San Francisco waterfront icon for more than 100 years. - about.com
