This cello (Monica Scott) - piano (Hadley McCarroll) duo is a distinguished East Bay ensemble with innovative, imaginative pairing of contemporary - and, yes, sometimes newly commissioned works - with treasured masterpieces, balancing the old with the new. The duo is dedicated to teaching and mentoring young artists, and have enjoyed participating as artist/coaches in the "Encounters" program at the Nueva School, through the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, as well as in the chamber music program at the Crowden School in Berkeley.
Their program with us includes Debussy's Sonate pour violoncelle et piano, Thomas Ades's Lieux retrouves, Oakland Youth Orchestra Director, Persian-American Omid Zoufonoun's Sonata for Cello and Piano and L. v. Beethoven's Sonata Op. 69 in A Major.
In Mr. Zoufonoun's words from 2012, his piece, commissioned by the duo, was inspired by the "...disturbing story of Mohammed Bouazizi's life, struggle and eventual self-immolation...The intimately collaborative process [of composing/interacting with the duo] has allowed me to experiment with a wide variety of musical ideas gathered from the traditional Persian Radif, while leveraging the technical prowess, depth of tone, and command of texture that these two amazing musicians bring to all of their interpretations."
