Babar in Exile #14: a revival of the Cafe Babar, Paradise Lounge and Club Chameleon reading series

The Octopus Literary Salon is proud to present Babar in Exile, a quarterly commemoration and revival of the high energy San Francisco reading series of the 1990’s, Café Babar, Paradise Lounge, and Club Chameleon. We are excited to feature two former and very active participants of Babar and Paradise, Neelie Cherkovski, poet, biographer, and editor of several anthologies, as well as winner of the 2017 Jack Mueller Award, and QR Hand, a towering figure of jazz and activist poetry with a heart of purest word, who barely needs introduction. As well we welcome “honorary Babarian” Kelly Landmine, NorCal native, coiffeur, and freakficionado who strode proudly past alternative long ago.
So come on down to check out a slice of Bay Area poetry history, now and in the making, and make your way home with a bindle full of inspiration and a thimbleful more hope for the species.

PERFORMER BIOS
Neeli Cherkovski was born in Los Angeles and attended Los Angeles State College (now Cal State Los Angeles). He is the author of many books of poetry, including Animal (1996), Leaning Against Time (2005), From the Canyon Outward (2009), and The Crow and I (2015). He is the coeditor of Anthology of L.A. Poets (with Charles Bukowski) and Cross-Strokes: Poetry between Los Angeles and San Francisco (with Bill Mohr). He has also published bilingual editions in Austria, Mexico, and Italy. A facsimile edition of one of his notebooks was published by Viviani Edizione in Verona, Italy. Cherkovski also wrote biographies of Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Charles Bukowski, as well as the critical memoir Whitman’s Wild Children (1988). His papers are held at the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. Cherkovski received the 2017 Jack Mueller Poetry Prize awarded at the Jack Mueller Festival in Fruita, Colorado. He has lived in San Francisco since 1974.

Kelly Landmine grew up in Stockton where she took any opportunity to get out of town. Especially if it meant coming to Bay Area which made her feel like she was coming home. Growing up in the 90’s San Francisco meant there were freaks to be friends with and lovers to hate one day. She has spent the last 12 years in Oakland and much of her forthcoming book, Weak Hearts and Big Egos is about those lovers and freaks she once daydreamed of meeting.
