'Artur Schnabel: No Place of Exile' | Piano Recital and Film Screening

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Pianist and producer Markus Pawlik will present a documentary film about the legendary pianist Artur Schnabel. The screening will be preceded by a short piano recital and followed by a Q&A session.

A legend among pianists of the 20th century, Artur Schnabel (1882-1951) is best known as the first performer to record the complete Beethoven sonatas.

The exiled Austro-German musician and composer was a giant of his time, but today he is nearly forgotten. In this documentary film, "Artur Schnabel: No Place of Exile," pianist and Schnabel devotee Markus Pawlik (in collaboration with baritone Dietrich Henschel and the Szymanowski String Quartet) prepares to bring Artur Schnabel's greatest compositions back in a major commemorative concert. Along the way, the film visits the places, landscapes and history that shaped and inspired Schnabel's life and music.

Lyrically realized by film director Matthew Mishory, the film rediscovers an essential 20th century artist displaced by the catastrophe of two World Wars and the Holocaust and inspired by the possibilities of modernism.

Markus Pawlik is one of the rare pianists today who combines sensitivity and expressiveness together with a phenomenal virtuoso technique. He began performing publicly at seven and won the grand prize at the first European Broadcast Union's televised Eurovision Young Musician of the Year competition. Pawlik performs worldwide, has released numerous solo and chamber music recordings, gives international master classes, has judged numerous competitions and taught as a guest lecturer at UCLA.

Daytime Adult Learning and Culture Programs are made possible in part by a generous grant from the Maimonides Fund at the Jewish Community Federation & Endowment Fund of San Francisco, The Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties.

Round trip, door-to-door rides for mobility-impaired seniors are available.
