Creation and destruction. They're fundamental building blocks of life, shaping all we have and determining all we know. You can sugarcoat it all you want, but the results are all the same. Life is created, life is destroyed, and the world goes on. In between? We live, we love, we laugh, we cry, we mourn. Life takes us on flights of uninhibited fancy, and life sends us down roads of unrelenting turmoil. Through the creation, through the destruction, and through the bittersweet ironies that consume us in the process In the midst of it all, there is heavy metal. And in the midst of the metal, there is Anthrax.

Anthrax are pioneers of the American metal scene, and patriots in music's new world order. They fought for liberation before the music industry even knew it was shackled, breaking down barriers that, at the time, few of us even knew existed. In the 80s, Anthrax was amongst the leaders of the heavy metal insurgence. In the 90s, they were among the few survivors of heavy metals apocalypse. And with the dawning of a new millennium, they've remained as unabashedly potent as they'd ever been.

Through the mid-80s to early-90s, Anthrax reigned as heavy metal hierarchy, their thrash metal tendencies crashing head-on with an uncanny ability to fuse molten rhythms, infectious melodies, and unbridled metal into damn-near perfect songs. After parting ways with frontman Joey Belladonna in 1992, they returned with Armored Saint frontman John Bush at the helm for the epic Sound Of White Noise in 1993. It was a new twist in a story that had no intention of ending. Anthrax have sold more than 10 million records worldwide, been nominated for three Grammy Awards, crossed the globe on more than fifty tours spanning 32 countries on five continents, released ten studio albums, and have left an indelible mark on the music industry. They said rap and metal could never mix, but Anthrax made it happen first, their 1991 collaboration with Public Enemy on the rappers Bring The Noise toppling social barriers between styles that few thought could co-exist. By the end of the decade, Anthrax could be credited with breaking ground on a whole new genre in the world of hard rock and heavy metal.

Black Label Society
https://blacklabelsociety.com

Black Label Society are the ongoing musical creation of infamous guitarist Zakk Wylde, who was plucked from obscurity by Ozzy Osbourne in 1987 and soon became a household name among heavy metal enthusiasts. Black Label Society were formed in 1998 after Wylde split from Ozzy and company. They recently released Unblackened, a live CD/DVD featuring a batch of stripped-down versions of their songs. The CD contains six bonus tracks, including covers of "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers and "A Song For You" by Leon Russell. Concerts give ticket holders plenty of bang for their buck. The band is a world-class live act, dishing out powerful sets of blues-based rock and metal songs fueled by Wylde's unmistakable guitar work and vocals. The band's recent unplugged-style concert performances may hint to a mellower approach in the future.

By the time Wylde embarked upon and struck out on his own solo career, he was a well-established name in the rock community. This eventually allowed him to achieve stand-alone success with the formation of Black Label Society and the debut album, Sonic Brew. Eight more albums, along with subsequent tours, were to follow. Their most popular studio release was Order Of The Black, which hit shelves in August 2010 and reached No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The band has another studio album that is set for release sometime in 2014. Whether it will rediscover the band's hard rocking roots or continue in the mellower vein is a mystery. Based on the band's history, it's anyone's guess.

Exodus

"I'm not happy unless I see someone out there in the pit, bleeding and smiling." - Gary Holt

For the troops in the trenches, it began in 1982 with a low generation copy of a local band's three-song demo. For some, it began with their first listen to Combat Records' version of "Bonded By Blood" in 1986. Still others will say what really mattered began on August 11th, 2001. Regardless of the year, these dates all have one thing in common: the tenacity of Gary Holt.

One cannot discuss the power and influence of Exodus without going into the genealogy of metal music itself. Long hailed as the band that spawned the burgeoning Bay Area Thrash scene in the early '80s, the band's most admirable quality is that the word "surrender" has never existed in lead guitarist/songwriter/General-In-Chief Gary Holt's vocabulary. Surviving decampment (original guitarist Kirk Hammett left to join Metallica in 1983), death (original vocalist Paul Baloff died in early 2002), untimely disaster (long-time second vocalist Steve Souza abandoned the band in 2004 on the eve of a South American tour), dejection (original drummer Tom Hunting was incapacitated by panic attacks in May 2005), and drug abuse (guitar comrade-in-arms Rick Hunolt's resignation in June 2005 was due in part to addiction issues), it would have been easier for many to interpret these events as a signal to retire, but then again, not everyone is Gary Holt.
