Angel Island Concert Series starts March 14th
Now entering its third season, the Del Sol Quartet's Angel Island Concert Series is the first-ever recurring concert series presented inside the immigration station.
With immigration and detention centers very much in the news and on our minds - how many of us know about the history of Angel Island and its Immigration Station?
Ironically it was the discovery of Chinese characters and poetry carved into the wooden walls of Angel Island facilities that helped to save the buildings from being demolished.
The Detention Barracks are now a Museum and on March 14th from noon - 1pm the Del Sol Quartet and poet Genny Lim are performing a program that centers women's voices of the Chinese diaspora, featuring excerpts from Facing the Moon: Songs of the Diaspora, which weaves contemporary music and community storytelling.
Designed to be family-friendly and intergenerational, each concert in the series pairs live performance with a hands-on history activity station, offering children, families, and curious visitors an accessible way to engage with Angel Island's stories. These activity stations, located near the historic detention barracks, encourage learning through exploration, reflection, and creativity--deepening the concert experience beyond listening alone.
Catch a ferry to Angel Island - there will be shuttles from Ayala Cove to the Immigration Station at 10:30 and 11:30 for the concert. The event is free with admission to the Detention Barracks Museum ($5 adult, $3 youth).
