An evening with Trumpter Ray Vega

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Stanford Dinkelspiel Auditorium (see times)
Trumpet/flugelhorn icon Ray Vega will be the featured guest artist with the Stanford Afro-Latin Ensemble. An established innovator of jazz and Latin music, Mr. Vega was the lead trumpet player for many years with Latin giants Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, and Mario Bauza; a jazz trumpeter with the Duke Ellington and Vanguard Jazz orchestras; and a classical trumpeter collaborating with composer Osvaldo Golijov. He has also released four CDs as a leader and has won or been nominated for multiple Grammy awards.

The concert showcases Mr. Vega both as a performer and arranger - the repertoire for the evening includes several pieces that he has specifically orchestrated for the Stanford group. The event is on Sunday May 26 at Stanford's Dinkelspiel Auditorium. Tickets are $10 general/$9 senior/$5 student. For more information, go to http://latinjazz.stanford.edu.

You won't want to miss this rare West coast appearance by Mr. Vega! Don't go anywhere far on Memorial Day weekend!

A native of the South Bronx, Mr. Vega grew up immersed in the heart of two vibrant New York City music scenes: Jazz and Salsa. His talent quickly led him to key collaborations with Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Mario Bauza, Luis "Perico" Ortiz, Hector LaVoe, and Johnny Pacheco. Now a bandleader in his own right, he presents Jazz from a refreshingly original and contemporary perspective. His two recordings on the Concord Picante label, his self-titled debut "Ray Vega", and "Boperation", along with his 1st release on the Palmetto label "Pa'lante" have been well received by critics, audiences and musicians alike. Vega's 2nd Palmetto CD "Squeeze, Squeeze" has also received critical acclaim including Four Stars in Down Beat Magazine. He is also serves as a full time senior lecturer at the University of Vermont, where he teaches Jazz History, directs all small Jazz Combos as well as The Jazz/Classical Trumpet Studio.

The Stanford Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble is directed by Grammy nominated pianist Murray Low. Since it's inception in 2008, it has rapidly developed into one of the finest performing groups of its kind. The group previously received a prestigious grant from SiCa (Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts) that helped to elevate Stanford University's presence as an education center in the field of Afro-Latin Jazz, as well as enhance student understanding of the music and increasing performance acumen. Several prominent musicians and educators in the field have mentored and collaborated with the group, including John Santos, Jesus Diaz, Doug Beavers, John Calloway, Wayne Wallace, Andrea Brachfeld, Marc Van Wageningen, and Michael Spiro.
