Ishkur’s Guide is a Fun Way to Learn About Electronic Music

Music discovery is a personal thing. It’s all around; following us when we’re out and about, alone in our rooms, when we’re sharing playlists with friends or going to shows and seeing bands we’ve never heard of. And so, when a friend turned me on to an alternative resource for music discovery focused on electronic music, I had to check it out. You might have already heard of the site, but if you’re new to it, like I was, the site is Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music.

At first glance, there’s a lot to investigate. But the unique way genres are arranged on a timeline makes it easy and fun to just click around. And while the site’s usability is highly dependent on having a decent internet connection, because each clickable little dot takes you into a world of historic, chronologic archiving, giving you genre definitions and songs from that genre. It’s a deep treasure trove.

And while I’ve only scratched a superficial level in the time I’ve spent on the site, the thing I can appreciate most is Ishkur’s love of music. He’s painstakingly matched music types, dates, songs and more. It’s clear that he has extensively combed through literally thousands of magazines, books, documentaries, record collections, and then added his unique experience.

The result is a site that you’ll want to come back to over and over again; to trace a sound’s origins, learn a little more about a favorite genre or discover something new – it’s music.ishkur.com.
