Amanda Marie, or as she is more artistically known Mando Marie, is exhibiting at the First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco from June 2nd to June 22nd. For her “One Trick” solo exhibition, you’ll see why she is considered a renowned painter and stencilist. Her materials of choice are aerosol paint, acrylic, watercolor paper, canvas and wood, screen printing and gel transfers. Through these textured materials, she often presents imagery reminiscent of the “Golden Age” in children’s literature. However, with the same raw materials, she also produces street art and outdoor paintings and murals on a grander scale.

Although she studied at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Colorado, she is currently based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She exhibits in both the U.S. and in Europe. Mando Marie is best known as a stencilist, but her wide-ranging appeal draws from the Street Art world to that of the Fine Arts.

Museum Director Anna Suzy Lee of Seoul’s Daelim Museum explains it this way, “Marie’s work is widely known for repeated or mirrored imagery by using hand-drawn and hand-cut stencils…Marie continues to present her work with recurring themes of children, animals, flora, and ghosts, with a particular sense of strength in youthful innocence and a hint of the oddly eerie.” And Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art‘s Executive Director, Jill Hartz says, “Amanda Marie….walks a fine line between 1950’s nostalgia and unnerving narratives that call into question our own memories and interpretations of childhood. She does this with a beautiful blend of humor and pathos.”
