Zagat Releases 2013 Bay Area Restaurant Guide

Zagat has released the results of its 2013 San Francisco Bay Area Restaurant guide, covering more than 1,600 restaurants.

The guidebook was recalled three weeks ago (a misspelling of San Francisco was a bit of a faux pas).

A look at some of the highlights – the more than 15,000 diners surveyed picked State Bird Provisions as the year’s “Top Newcomer,” earning a 27 on Zagat’s 30-point scale. Among the other top newcomers were AQ Restaurant & Bar in San Francisco, Alex Restaurant in Rutherford, Redd Wood in Yountville and Park Tavern in North Beach in San Francisco, all with scores of 25.

Once again, Gary Danko in San Francisco was ranked as the restaurant with Top Food, Top Service and Most Popular. The French Laundry was voted the number two restaurant in the Bay Area. Sierra Mar in Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn won for Best Décor and the Mission District’s Bi-Rite Creamery won for Top Bang for the Buck.

The Zagat Survey found that Bay Area diners reported eating out an average of 2.9 meals per week and the average tip is 18.6%, tied with Seattle for the lowest among major U.S. markets. Italian, French, American and Japanese were listed as the favorite cuisines.

San Francisco continues to be the most tech-savvy U.S. market, with 2/3 of diners making reservations online. Almost half of the respondents also said they have a restaurant-related app on their smartphone and 14 percent post on social media when they arrive at a restaurant.

The Zagat 2013 San Francisco Bay Area Restaurants Guide can be purchased anywhere books are sold.
