The Fresh & Onlys Announce New Album

Just over two years ago, San Francisco psychedelic rock group The Fresh & Onlys were one of the city’s favorite best-kept secrets. When the band’s third LP,  Play it Strange released in 2010 via In The Red, The Fresh & Onlys exploded as frontrunners in the local music scene. Since then, the band has maintained the demeanor of a local band, meanwhile gaining respect for their talent and devotion to what matters most: their music. They’ve played an abundance of local shows at practically every applicable venue in the city from The Make Out Room to The Independent, they’ve done European tours and even spent time hitting the festival circuit with appearances at Phono Del Sol Music Festival, Woodsist Fest in Big Sur, and SXSW. Despite all their success, you can still find The Fresh & Onlys hanging out at Amoeba Records, the shop that bassist Shayde Sartin still calls his day job.

As The Fresh & Onlys approach the release of their 4th album, Long Slow Dance, their forecast is just as heavy and bright as ever as they embark on a US tour with Terry Malts, Grass Widow, and Quilt. Long Slow Dance is perhaps the band’s most meticulously produced albums to date. It is also being released by Mexican Summer, a label known for a wide selection of noteworthy, polished up-and-coming indie artists, like Washed Out, Weekend, No Joy, Best Coast, Tamaryn, Ariel Pink… (and the list goes on). It’s no surprise that Mexican Summer was eager to get The Fresh & Onlys on their roster.

Long Slow Dance possesses The Fresh & Only’s personal style that is present throughout their previous albums; at least on the first single that’s been released, “Yes or No”, which you can listen to below this article. Tim Cohen’s raw crooning, Wyland Miles’ melodic and sunny guitar, steady low baselines from Sartin and Kyle Gibson’s upbeat drums to carry it all. The hooks on “Yes or No” are quite catchy, and with a heavier guitar riff it’s even a bit more commercial than their previous efforts, yet there is something genuine and authentic about it all. The Fresh & Onlys are playing at Woodsist Festival in Big Sur this Sunday, and catch them back in San Francisco at The Independent on September 8th.

Long Slow Dance will be released on September 4th via Mexican Summer.
