Hundreds Victimized in Credit Card Skimming Operation

24 Bay Area Lucky supermarkets have been victimized by a credit and debit card-skimming operation.

SaveMart Supermarkets, which operates the Lucky chain, said more than 500 customers have contacted them about fraudulent or attempted fraudulent activity.

The company issued a consumer advisory in late November after learning that its card-reading machines in self-checkout lanes contained data skimming devices. “Every customer should continue checking their accounts regularly as a precaution if they used a checkout terminal in October or November,” the customer advisory stated.

The latest store to be put on the list was the Lucky San Leandro store on Fairmont Drive.

Local, state and federal agencies are involved in the investigation and the U.S. Secret Service is examining the tampered readers.

If you feel like you have been a victim of fraud, contact SaveMart’s customer service line at 1-800-692-5710.
