The Twilight Singers Announces Special SF Show

Gather up your flannel and dust off your Doc Martins. It’s time to start up that Marlboro habit again. The Twilight Singers will perform Blackberry Belle for one show only on September 17th at The Great American Music Hall.

Greg Dulli, front man of the now defunct Afghan Whigs, began The Twilight Singers as a side project in the midst of a label dispute in the late 90s. Though the dispute was settled, Afghan Whigs broke up soon after and Dulli focused his efforts on The Twilight Singers, a darker and deeply introspective departure from his previous band. Where The Afghan Whigs pumped out radio friendly alt-rock and are perhaps the most 90s sounding band in existence, The Twilight Singers took on a more experimental side, adding elements of trip-hop, folk and electronica. This created a more cohesive sound, ripe with rounded-out subtleties and creating a less angsty, more self-exploratory look at the former 90s figurehead.

Blackberry Belle is the band’s sophomore release from 2003, a tribute to Dulli’s longtime friend Ted Demme who died of a heart attack in early 2002. It is a defining release for The Twilight Singers, one that garnered them great press but also one that solidified their sound, style and connectivity. It wfeatures guest appearances by Mathias Schneeberger, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Stanton Moore, Petra Haden (who currently plays with The Decemberists), and long time friend, collaborator and Screaming Trees front man, Mark Lanegan.

Originally, the performance date was scheduled to make up for a previously cancelled gig but now the band has announced that at the September 17th gig, it will be performing two sets of music: the first will be Blackberry Belle in its entirety and the second will be a retrospective of the entire span of its +10 year career. This is a must see for any fan of Greg Dulli’s work and one that will likely not be repeated.

The Twilight Singers will perform Blackberry Belle at The Great American Music Hall on Saturday, September 17th. Tickets are $23 and go on sale this Sunday at 10am. Go to www.gamhtickets.com to purchase.
