Mayor Lee Calls For Soda-Free Summer

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has launched the fifth year of the soda-free summer campaign in the city, asking residents to rethink their drink choices.

The campaign is part of the Shape Up San Francisco initiative to tackle obesity and diabetes among Bay Area children and adults.

City health officials are urging residents to choose healthier beverages over items such as sodas and other drinks full of added sugar.

“San Francisco is fortunate to have pristine tap water from Hetch Hetchy that is among the cleanest and best tasting in the world,” Lee said in a statement. “This summer, I encourage everyone to rethink choosing sugary drinks and rehydrate with clean, refreshing tap water.”

Other city agencies and organizations are incorporating activities that encourage children to make healthier choices as part of the campaign.
