Bakesale Betty’s Fried Chicken Sandwich

Endless Simmer Takes a Look at the Top 10 New Style Sandwiches in the US

Obviously any top 10 list should be taken with a grain of salt, but what’s cool is that Bakesale Betty in Oakland makes it on Endless Simmer’s list for their buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches. Not being from Oakland, this little tidbit of knowledge is a revelation.

Perpetually purple-wigged owner Alison Barakat started out as a pastry chef at the ultimate farm-to-table temple: Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse in neighboring Berkeley. Fooling around on her lunch breaks, she whipped up these extra-crispy buttermilk fried chicken patties for her co-workers, topping them with a savory slaw of sliced jalapenos, pickled red onions, and high-quality olive oil. Her McChickens-for-foodies grew so in demand that she soon opened her own lunch counter spot, which runs through 1,000 chicken sandwiches daily. Get there early — they almost always sell out.

I’ll be sure to make it over the bridge very soon as my taste buds are bursting at the thought of chomping into that tasty chicken sandwich.

Bakesale Betty’s has two locations: One on Telegraph in Temescal and another on Broadway near Grand.
