Deobrat Mishra is a celebrated Indian sitarist and composer, and an exponent of the esteemed Benares Gharana school of Hindustani classical music. The son of Pandit Shivnath Mishra, a legend of Sitar from this Gharana, he will be bringing his energetic and innovative playing style to the Yoga Center. This is sure to be a treat for all lovers of the sacred music of India! Last year he even sang for us.

He will be accompanied on tabla by his nephew Prashant Mishra as part of their Music of Benares US Tour.

Deobrat Mishra
Deobrat Mishra is one of the seventh generation artists of the renowned music family of Benares, Gharana. Selectivity, melody and chain harmony (slow, medium and fast) are prominent features of his style.

He studied music with his father, the great sitar Maestro Pandit Shivanth Mishra. He started with tabla, then vocal music, and then sitar at the age of five. He learned tabla from his mother, who is a granddaughter of well-known tablist Baiju Mishra. He gave his first sitar stage program at the age of eight.

Many great artists encouraged Deobrat Mishra, among them his granduncle Padmabhshan Pt. Kishan Maharaj (world-famous tabla artist). He was showing astonishing skill on the sitar at age 10. At the age of 11, he gave his first program on India Radio.

He played with many artists, among them Late Pt. Nankoo Moharoj (maternal grandfather), Prakash Maharaj, Kumar Lal Mishra, Lachhu Maharaj, Ustad Fazal Qureshi (brother of Ustad Zakir Hussain), Nazim Hussain (son of Padama Vibhushan Bishmillas Khan), Pt. Homnath Upadhyay (Nepal), Hanif Khan (England), etc.

He has gone abroad every year since 1994 with the intention of expanding the audience for Indian Classical music. He stood on a panel of best sitarists in All Over India Youth Festival 1995, organized by Indian Government. The Italian Conservatory organized a three-day seminar of Indian Classical Music, where he taught about Indian Classical Music with his father. He performed in Paris and many cities of France. He performed live on National Television of Italy. S.O.R.F Musical Representative Organisation made 2 CDs of him playing with his father. Many CDs of his music are available.

Deobrat Mishra has been performing internationally, including the Pacific Northwest since 2006. He has toured the US with his father and guru, Pandit Shivnath Mishra, since that time—most recently touring Washington, Oregon and California in the fall of 2016.
