Guide to Staying Warm when it’s Freezing in San Francisco

Don’t let the dropping temps keep you locked up inside. Throw on that fancy scarf and warm gloves because San Francisco has plenty to offer even in cold weather. Here are a few of our favorite things we recommend to keep cozy, stay dry, and have fun!

Bars with Fireplaces
Get together with a few close friends and keep cozy by the fireplace with a drink in hand. Bars with fireplaces are the perfect intimate escape from the cold. Try Zeki’s in Nob Hill, Fireside Bar on Irving St., or Maven on Haight.

Get a Bowl of Pho
This delicious Vietnamese favorite made of rice noodles, chicken or beef broth, and meat is the perfect meal when the fog rolls through. Try places like Pho Huynh Hiep 2, also known as Kevin’s Noodle House, on Irving St. and Pho 2000 on Larkin St. And if you think you’re over the Pho hype, switch over to another Vietnamese noodle soup made of rice vermicelli, beef, and a spicy lemongrass broth called bun bo Hue.

Jump, Jump, Jump Around
Time to show off your acrobatic skills! Bounce around on wall-to-wall trampolines at House of Air in the Presidio. They host dodgeball games that will make you feel like you’re in grade school gym class again. It’s a great place to seek shelter from the rain and cold winds.

Treat Yourself to a Cup of Tea
Oolong, Rooibos, and Pu-Erh! Oh, my! There’s nothing like freshly brewed loose leaf teas on a rainy day. A nice cup of tea keeps the soul relaxed and calm. Check out Taste in Hayes Valley for Chinese teas and steamed buns.

Karaoke
Sing your heart out to Cry Me a River by Justin Timberlake whilst the rain pours down. Go to happy hour at Playground in Japantown or The Mint in Hayes Valley. The windowless karaoke rooms will have you forget about the arctic temperatures and find out which friends are tone-deaf.

California Academy of Sciences
With an indoor rainforest, planetarium, and aquarium, who would care about the freezing temperatures outside? The rainforest, a 90 feet tall glass dome, features frogs, birds, free-flying birds and butterflies from around the world. The tropic temperatures maintained at 85 degrees Fahrenheit will have you forgetting you’re actually inside. Check out some of their holiday programs.

Climb Some Rocks
Don’t let the weather keep you from staying active. Work on your climbing skills at Planet Granite in the Presidio. The facility boasts 25,000 square foot of climbing space and expansive views of Crissy Field.

Bowling
Bowling is a great way to get competition sparking amongst friends. Mission Bowling Club, located in the Mission, has a full service bar and fried chicken to satisfy your comfort food craving. Who knew indoor sports could be so much fun?
