R.E.M. Breaks Up After Three Decades
Today one of rock and roll’s all-time great bands called it quits after three long decades together. The band released a statement through their website announcing the split.
The statement from the band reads:
“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” R.E.M.
The band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980 when frontman Michael Stipe met guitarist Peter Buck at a record store Buck worked at. Soon after the pair met bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry who were attending the University of Georgia. The band’s résumé includes 15 studio releases, countless iconic singles, world tours and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

Stipe was a great showman in addition to singing. Always remember his enthusiastic participation in the Vote for Change tour.
