Zoe Keating is a cellist and composer who uses live sampling to create layers for her songs, similar to Reggie Watts. But where Watts uses his voice samples as a beat, Keating loops cello sequences to stack layers of instrumentation on top of each other. The result is a rhythmically dense song with peaks and valleys of musical intricacy. It allows her music to carry an orchestral weight, but it also gives the listener a sense of rising action as Keating adds layer after layer to a particular verse. The build-up to a momentous sound carries an emotional power that many contemporary classical artists struggle to present, but Keating can deliver gracefully. She'll be joined by four other electronic artists in closing out the Tech Museum's REBOOT:music exhibition. (JD)
