There was a time when few people in the States really had much of a concept of what afrobeat was (African music that combines traditional sounds with jazz and funk). After some diligent DJs started digging up some amazing old '70s African records, and artists like David Byrne, Paul Simon and later, Vampire Weekend, started to really incorporate these influences, the genre gained more mainstream attention. Local San Francisco Zanzibar group take the afrobeat genre, but they also mix it with Latin Beats. They play a mixture of percussion instruments, guitars, drums, saxophone and sometimes even a flute.
