Oakland native Jerold Ellis III firmly established himself as a major player in East Bay hip-hop two decades ago when he and Garrick Husbands (a.k.a. Numskull)--who together formed The Luniz--released what is perhaps the best-known paean to smoking herb in rap history. "I Got 5 on It," which appeared on the 1995 Luniz album, Operation Stackola, helped the duo's debut record go platinum. Since then, Yukmouth has established his own label, founded the Thug Lordz with C-Bo and Spice 1, and released many of his own solo albums. He is currently touring behind his April 22 release, GAS (which stands for “Grow and Sale,†natch). (Nick Veronin)
