at 688 Gallery (see times)
Yishu Wang is a fine art printmaker, book artist originally comes from China. “Life Is Elsewhere” is her first solo show at the United States which features her printmaking and artist book works recently done.

How does space and environment influence the psychology and emotion of an individual? Whether the environment being that of the natural landscape or architectural man-made space. Does our external environment go to the extend of defining our behavior? Restraining our behavior? These questions are what artist Yishu Wang have been investigating throughout her artistic career.  And they have really become the focal point of her artworks since she first came to the US four years ago. “Having never lived elsewhere outside of my hometown of Xi’an, China, the experience of suddenly being in a foreign land disorientated me. I became deeply affected by my new surroundings. Language could not effectively express my experience, only art”, says Yishu Wang.

Academically trained in painting for 8 years in China, Yishu didn’t begin to incorporate printmaking processes and techniques in her projects until recently. Compared to painting, printmaking’s repeatability enables her to experiment using various techniques the endless possibilities of a single image.

Her expressively representational style is reminiscent of German Expressionism. The subdued colors, aggressive and bold mark-makings emanate a raw energy that is rarely found in the medium of printmaking. Yishu Wang, as an experimental printmaker, really pushed the boundaries of this medium, particularly that of Intaglio and Screenprinting. The results are highly expressive and painterly.
