Yerba Buena Gardens Festival Presents Dyertribe: Steve & Bokani Dyer + Izithunywa feat. Ndabo Zulu & Linda Sikhakhane

Marking the 30th anniversary of South Africa's first free, post-apartheid election, this double bill presents the perfect artists to celebrate the momentous occasion. Saxophonist Steve Dyer is one of South Africa's most influential jazz artists, and his music was shaped by the revolutionary anti-apartheid movement. He performs with Dyertribe, his duo with his son, pianist/composer Bokani Dyer. They're joined by the duo Izithunywa featuring trumpeter Ndabo Zulu and saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane. With Bokani's immersion in his Tswana heritage from Botswana and Ndabo's passion for pre-colonial musical traditions of the Zulu (practices repressed by the apartheid government), both groups embrace an expansive aesthetic steeped in history while committed to investigating new sounds and forms. Co-presented with the Museum of the African Diaspora, the Bay Area residency includes a talk and musical demonstration at MoAD Friday, June 7.
