The Foothill College Dance Program presents "Year of the Ram: L-O- V-E," its annual spring show, May 29–30 at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. A showcase of students’ original and experimental works will be staged at 7 p.m. The main performance kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with welcome remarks from Foothill College President Judy C. Miner, Ed.D.
Under the direction of Bubba Gong, who celebrates his 29th season as founder and artistic director of the 60-member company, the show will include premieres of six new works, including "Fosse Frug," a tribute to the legendary dance icon; "Beyond the Velvet Rope," a contemporary ballet that explores love; "East Side Story," a classic twist on Romeo and Juliet with a distinctive Chinese flavor; "Express Burlesque" from the popular movie; "Brazilian Zouk"; and "Living for Love," a grand finale defining Gong’s personal philosophy of inclusion and diversity in dance. The two-hour concert emphasizes dance forms that strike a world beat, including the energy of carnival, traditional Chinese handkerchief dance, Egyptian belly dance and a classical Persian solo.
Under Gong’s direction, members of the Foothill Repertory Dance Company opened San Francisco’s world-famous Chinese New Year Parade last March with "East Side Story," a fusion of Peking Opera, American Sign Language and hip-hop.
