We often think of Style as subjective. How well can software represent those qualities? Artistic style transfer is an AI technique that attempts to apply the style of one image to another. Apps such as Prisma put this technology in anyone's hands and yet there is a point where the novelty becomes a toy. Without a pipeline to extend this image making into other creative practices, the outcomes lack depth. We need to go deeper.
This is a hands-on workshop. Your results will be shown at the [2018] CODAME ART+TECH Festival
We'll train and run the style transfer algorithm on a laptop. Our neural network will redraw images from a webcam in the style(s) we choose. Anyone who's ever taken a selfie knows that making interesting pictures means editing the world a bit. We will experiment with strategies for exaggerating the environment and the camera itself. Previous programming experience isn't required. A prepackaged deep learning framework will be available for your machine before the workshop.
