The Growlery presents: Without Within, New works by Tania Houtzager
Exhibition Dates: February 17- March 16, 2018
Opening Reception: February 17th from 7-10pm.
Gallery Hours: by appointment
Location: 235 Broderick Street, San Francisco, CA 94117
During her residency at the Growlery, Tania Houtzager has created site-specific sculptures and installations that play with the potentiality of space and suggest realities that are just out of reach. Through a process-based practice, Houtzager’s works strive to highlight the absence of forms. Like spectres or memories, Houtzager’s creations evoke something intangible and intimate, activating the environs of the large Victorian house through a push and pull of soft and hard, simplicity and intricacy, emptiness and presence.
About the Artist
Tania Houtzager is a San Francisco, Bay Area artist whose work investigates the physical and psychological structures of her environment. Through material investigation and process based practices she explores notions of space, consciousness and memory. Houtzager received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2017 and has exhibited her work in San Francisco, Oakland, New York and Venice, Italy.
She has a BA from Hampshire College where she double majored in Studio Art and Art Education and she has a Masters in Design from the Auckland University of Technology where she researched art museum experiences. In addition to her art practice, Tania is the founder of an online art history project called Sartle.com and of the nonprofit art organization Embark Arts Inc where she is the Executive Director of Embark Gallery.
