"Wish You Were Here: A Tentative Bestiary" by Lee Cline: Opening Reception

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Four Barrel Coffee and The Mill are pleased to present "Wish You Were Here: A Tentative Bestiary" by Lee Cline. As a California native, Lee has developed a great interest in the nonhuman animal population of the Golden State, and in her newest collection of paintings presents portraits of some of the species whose stories have resonated with her. These beasts and birds are our neighbors, California natives all. Each species has its own California story, and those of us fortunate enough to be familiar with them have our own stories to tell of sightings and experiences, often with powerful evocations of landscape, place, and time. The exception, of course, is the now-extinct California grizzly, depicted on our own state flag, the last of which was shot and killed in the Sierra foothills in 1922.

Informing the work in this show is Lee's own admitted frustration and angst over the climate crisis as it affects this golden state. And even though California's state leaders have been uncommonly proactive in addressing the challenges of climate change, our situation remains dire absent national and global political will. So here in California, tragically, we face a new normal of increasingly severe weather including extreme droughts and catastrophic wildfires.

Though the references may not be explicit, underlying each painting is a subtext of melancholy or loss. In the studio, Lee found that these paintings resisted a specific narrative but wanted to stand on their own, with something of a dignity or strength or wistfulness or even defiance. She felt she had to get out of the way and let that happen. Perhaps they are totems or fetishes. May they be reminders of our interconnectedness and interdependence here on this fragile planet.

Lee was born and raised in California, earning a BA in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College. Lee turns to painting as a means to escape the artifice and superficiality of this mad mad world. Her work has been shown and sold in various shows and venues over the years. She, her husband, and their dog currently split their time between San Francisco's Mission District and rural Maine, where they own and operate a flower farm in between time in their studios.

"Wish You Were Here: A Tentative Bestiary" runs from December 9 through January 26 at The Mill in San Francisco. Join us on Thursday, December 12th from 6-9pm for the opening reception. Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance.
