William Saroyan - author, Californian, Armenian - was incredibly popular in his lifetime. Writing about the immigrant experience and the human condition, Saroyan's prose is just as accessible and relevant today as it was when he wrote it in the mid-20th century. His visual art taps into a similar familiarity, joining casual doodles with striking colors and shapes that invigorate the soul. Known as a short story writer and playwright, Saroyan also expressed himself through watercolors and ink drawings that reflect both his wild imagination and the growing art movements of his time. He was a proud Fresnan and San Franciscan, and spent countless hours with family in Santa Clara County.
Forever Saroyan has curated from its private collection seventeen historic works of art created by Saroyan from the 1930s through the 1960s that have never been seen by the public. In partnership with the Saratoga Library, this rare exhibit will show from August 1, 2022, through September 30, 2022, in the main entry hall of the Saratoga Library, at 13650 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, 95070; open Monday and Tuesday 10a-9p and Wednesday through Sunday 10a-6p.
