White Crate's 5th Anniversary Party with La Doña

SEE EVENT DETAILS
White Crate's 5th Anniversary Party with La Doña + Peña, BOLERO!, and Louie El Ser

La Doña
https://ladona415.com

La Doña is a solo artist, music educator, activist and cultural worker from San Francisco, CA. Born Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea, she began her career at age seven playing trumpet, strings and percussion in her family's conjunto. She is a student, teacher and preservationist of Latinx traditional arts like corrido, bolero, cumbia, and mariachi. In her compositions, she combines these ancestral traditions with contemporary diasporic musics like reggaeton, hip-hop and jazz. La Doña's live performances are grounded in ceremony and social mobilization; she and her audiences sing, dance, cry and chant together, for collective healing and political action.

Peña
https://nicopenya.bandcamp.com

Bilingual bedroom-bossa brainchild of a Chilean-American first gen only child. Surf and turf, jazz-gaze stir fry for emotional souls who appreciate pop equations.

BOLERO!
https://bolero-sf.bandcamp.com

SF psych/rock!

~~~~~~~~~
La Doña's name denotes authority and mastery, traits that Cecilia Peña-Govea embodies after years of providing celebratory soundtracks for countless community celebrations. Growing up playing trumpet and singing alongside her sister in the San Francisco band run by their parents, La Familia Peña-Govea, she learned a vast, crowd-pleasing repertoire of tunes from an array of Mexican and Caribbean styles and traditions. Coming into her own as La Doña, she's created her own sound blending reggaetón and hip hop beats with the Latin American roots music that nurtured her. Her 2020 EP Algo Nuevo earned widespread national attention, but she's always working on new music.
