"What the Frack?!" Panel Discussion

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at SF Camerawork (see times)
This discussion is held in conjunction with Sarah Christianson’s exhibit of photographs, "When the Landscape is Quiet Again: North Dakota’s Oil Boom."*

This exhibition presents an important perspective in the debate over our nation’s dependency on oil, and the goal of this discussion is to inform the public about the growing pains and concerns over oil development in North Dakota and California. Panelists will include Lora Jo Foo, co-chair of the Bay Area Sierra Club’s “Don’t Frack California” action team; Will Rostov, an attorney for Earthjustice who works on cases involving fracking; and western North Dakota landowners impacted by the oil boom. The discussion will be moderated by photographer Sarah Christianson, who will speak about the history of oil production in North Dakota and her experiences there while creating this project.

About the Panelists
Lora Jo Foo is a retired labor organizer and attorney, nature photographer, author, and environmental activist. Fracking in California is posed to expand dramatically, threatening our air, water, climate, and public health. The industry claims the Monterey Shale that stretches from the San Joaquin Valley to Los Angeles Basin has four times the amount of recoverable shale oil as the Bakken Shale fields, or two-thirds of the nation's shale oil. Big oil wants to turn California into the new Saudi Arabia unless we stop them. On behalf of the Sierra Club’s Bay Area Chapter, Ms. Foo will speak about what fracking looks like in California, including a process called acidization, and the ongoing efforts to ban fracking in California. She will also discuss efforts to stop the transport and refining of Bakken shale oil by the five Bay Area refineries.

Will Rostov is a staff attorney for Earthjustice—the nation’s premier environmental law organization. Mr. Rostov focuses on energy and climate change issues in California, helping to transition California away from fossil fuels toward cleaner energy sources. Mr. Rostov advocated for and achieved the first ever large scale mandate for energy storage technologies in California, which will provide a path toward a low carbon future. On behalf of four environmental groups, Mr. Rostov also sued the State of California over its failure to apply the California Environmental Quality Act to fracking. Prior to joining Earthjustice, Mr. Rostov was Senior Attorney for the Center for Food Safety where he worked on issues related to genetically engineered crops. As a staff attorney for Communities for a Better Environment, Mr. Rostov worked on cases involving pollution from oil companies. Mr. Rostov earned a B.A. from Oberlin College and graduated cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Sarah Christianson (www.sarahchristianson.com) grew up on a four-generation family farm in eastern North Dakota. Immersed in that vast expanse of the Great Plains, she developed a strong affinity for the Midwestern landscape and experience. This connection to place continues to manifest itself in her photographic work. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in the collections of several institutions in the Midwest and of the National Museum of Photography in Copenhagen. She received an MFA in photography from the University of Minnesota in 2009. Since then, Ms. Christianson has been living in San Francisco. Her first book, Homeplace, was recently published by Daylight Books (Fall 2013). She was motivated to start documenting North Dakota’s oil boom out of concern for the future of her home state and because of her family’s ownership of mineral acres in the heart of the Bakken.
