SEE EVENT DETAILS
In an unprecedented exhibition, four generations of Weston photographers will be on display in a museum gallery. Weston: Four Generations 1886-2013 opens March 29 at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. The Center is honored to present images, art and artifacts from Edward, Brett, Kim and Zach Weston. Kim and his son Zach will curate this monumental event for Monterey County’s first family of photography.

Parental Discretion Advised. The exhibition includes nude photos.

The opening reception takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at the National Steinbeck Center, located at 1 Main Street, Salinas. The public reception is free. A soft opening begins Monday, March 10. Visitors can view the exhibit with paid admission to the National Steinbeck Center.

“The Weston names stands as a cornerstone of traditional black and white photography,” said Jewel Gentry, assistant curator of exhibitions and collections at the National Steinbeck Center. “From landscapes to nudes, the Westons have run the gamut of subject matter and themes, reaching creative heights that have put the Monterey region at the center of several artistic movements. The story continues as you’ll see in the exhibition’s work of Kim and Zach Weston.”

In his artist statement, Kim Weston said “I make pictures, which are meant to be direct and truthful. I do not explain or rationalize the work or my passion for it. I leave it to the viewer to find the surprises. I hope the work generates feelings. Otherwise, I have failed.”

Kim’s son Zach Weston said “My photographic vision represents a unique perspective, one that only I truly understand. Seeking truth in a world of confusion is my objective…”

This exhibition will also present a collection of works produced by recipients of the Weston Scholarship. Since 2004, the Weston Scholarship has awarded 157 scholarships to Monterey County students of traditional black and white photography. The scholarship exhibition includes images produced between 2004-2013.
