GLIDE and Veterans Alley are joining forces to bring community expressive art to the Tenderloin. For five weeks beginning in late April, esteemed neighborhood muralist and Veterans Alley founder Amos Gregory will be hosting a weekly workshop at GLIDE to teach the art of muralism to the local community. All are welcome and Amos will personally mentor anyone interested in making the commitment to take on apprenticeship during the project.
This project is part of the GLIDE Center for Social Justice’s empowerment work, which brings community-focused art and organizing to the Tenderloin through partnerships and innovative initiatives. It is also simultaneously an expansion of the work that has been done by Veterans Alley since 2011, bringing emotional and civic empowerment to disenfranchised communities through expressive art and community building. Working at GLIDE, Veterans Alley will be able to reach a large cross section of the Tenderloin community, both non-veterans and veterans, including those struggling to bring their voices to many issues from displacement, to homelessness, to the everyday beauty and vibrant humanity of an often-misunderstood neighborhood.
The project will focus on the theme of Tenderloin Solidarity and will produce a wall-sized mural that will be showcased at GLIDE, through the brushes of GLIDE’s program participants and neighborhood residents.
