The “I Am Bayview” photo series, currently installed in the T stations that run along the 3rd Street corridor of Bayview and the Dogpatch, is a project by artists George McCalman and Jason Madara Photography. The original purpose of the campaign was to capture Bayview Hunters Point residents who represent their neighborhood proudly and to visually communicate that if one is going to move into a neighborhood, you should get to know the people who live there, not simply displace an existing community.This project touched a raw nerve in the Bayview Hunters Point community and San Francisco at large. This project exposed a need in the community to talk gentrification, about what is happening in our communities and how we can control how we are seen. OPENING RECEPTIONJoin us Thursday, September 27 at The Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theater, to experience the “I Am Bayview” portrait series in its entirety. We want to use this portrait series as a catalyst for discussion about what is important to the Bayview Hunters Point community. Interested community members will have an opportunity to be photographed by the originators of the project and tell us what this community means to them. Their pictures will be included as projected images during the closing event on October 4th.EXHIBIT HOURSDaily Sep 28 - Oct 3, 1PM - 4PMCLOSING EVENT AND PANEL DISCUSSIONOn the final night of the weeklong exhibition, Thursday, October 4th, The Bayview Opera House will host a panel discussion with the artists and select community stakeholders to discuss the identity of Bayview Hunters Point. This discussion is meant to address the following in the context of a community in transition and feeling the effects of gentrification:How can a community take control of its identity and representation? How can we, as a community, recognize our shared history?How can we celebrate the unique culture and identity of Bayview Hunters Point? The original exhibit was supported by EDot- Economic Development on Third, Invest In Neighborhoods and Supervisor Malia Cohen's office.The present exhibit is supported by funding from the San Francisco Arts Commission, Grants for the Arts and the The San Francisco Foundation.
