In honor of the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day (the official end of World War I) the San Francisco City Chorus in collaboration with the Calvary Chancel Choir and Orchestra will present a very special concert entitled “War & Peace” on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, at 4 pm, with a pre-concert talk at 3:15.
The program will feature two iconic masterpieces of the choral-orchestral repertoire, each dealing with the subject of war and peace: Joseph Haydn’s “Missa in Angustiis” (Mass in Time of Anguish), also known as “Lord Nelson Mass” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem,” a setting of Walt Whitman’s civil-war era poetry. Haydn’s “Nelson” Mass was written while Napoleon’s armies had crossed the Alps and were threatening Vienna, and Vaughan Williams’ composed his “Dona Nobis Pacem” in 1936 in commemoration of the recent “great war” and amid fears of the next world war looming on the horizon. These transcendent masterworks are infused with a spirit of both the horror of war itself, and the hope of lasting peace.
