Volti Concert: Bay and Beyond

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The professional vocal ensemble Volti completes its 39th season of "singing without a net" in a concert program celebrating composers with strong Bay Area connections. Robert Geary conducts.

San Francisco composer DANNY CLAY's work is deeply rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and the sheer joy of making things. His "Playbook Choruses" (Volti commission, world premiere) are a series of playful and improvisatory bagatelles, rooted in games created in rehearsal with the Volti singers.

ZIBUOKLE MARTINAITYTE was born in Lithuania and lived in San Francisco for a time before moving to New York. Volti will premiere her "Chant des Voyelles," composed only of vowel sounds, in which the composer experiments with subtly shifting, sometimes barely audible clouds of overtones resulting from the sustaining of certain vowels in multiple voices.
(Volti commission, world premiere)

ROBIN ESTRADA ranks among the bold and innovative talents in Philippine composition today. Robin received his Ph.D. in Music Composition at UC Berkeley and his M.M. at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Volti commissioned his "Caeli enarrant" in 2016 and brings it back for a second hearing on this concert.

TERRY RILEY is of course one of the grand old men of contemporary music, with many connections to the Bay Area and beyond. His "Mexico City Blues" (1993) sets poetry by Jack Kerouac.

HENRY COWELL was a highly influential music theorist, pianist, publisher and teacher, as well as a prolific composer of almost one thousand pieces, in every conceivable genre. Volti will sing two of his choral pieces, "Psalm 121" (1958) and "The Morning Cometh" (1937).
