The popularity of the Italian madrigal in England began in the 1580s and lasted for over 100 years. What makes this performance special is the renaissance Elizabethan viols which are primarily based on the work of John Rose, who was famous by the 1550s for his "vyalls" and other instruments. For the renaissance ideal, the consort was conceived of as a matched set, and all the instruments that will be played in this program were made by one builder, Wesley Brandt, using similar patterns, techniques and timbers based closely on historical models.
In this genuine dialogue between the soprano and the contemplative playfulness of the Elizabethan viol consort, we will engage the music of Italians such as Monteverdi, Marenzio, and Ferrabosco the Elder, as well as music by their English admirers Dowland, Byrd, Ward, Ferrabosco the Younger and Coperario.
With the Voice of the Viol consort, and soprano Danielle Reutter-Harrah.
