Voice for the Voiceless: Women

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Chelsea Hollow, soprano & Sophie Xuefei Zhang, piano

Margaret Martin Three Children’s Songs World Premiere
Sophie Xuefei Zhang Autumn River World Premiere
Niloufar Nourbankhsh The Darkness of the Womb World Premiere
plus works by Jake Heggie, Ernest Bloch, Francis Poulenc, and Stacy Garrop, and a set of cabaret songs by “Ma” Rainey, Kurt Weill, and Edith Piaf

Chelsea Hollow and Sophie Xuefei Zhang bring together a program celebrating women of a variety of ages, backgrounds, and social status through a lens of five sets of voices: a group of allies, young women, a woman in China questioning her lack of independence, women of the cabaret and blues traditions, and an activist offering a hope for a better future. The program features three world premieres by Margaret Martin (Berkeley, CA), Sophie Xuefei Zhang (Tianjin, China), and Niloufar Nourbankhsh (New York, NY) as well as two sets of carefully curated music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Through the intimacy of recital, depth of viewpoints presented in each song, and a layout which moves from questions of our past towards answers of tomorrow, Hollow and Zhang aim to spark conversation and inspire progress and collective growth. The 2019 recital tour will feature concerts in San Francisco, New York, & Los Angeles. For more information, please visit the artists’ websites at chelseahollow.com and zhangsophie.com.
