Vedanta: The Path of Self-Inquiry

SEE EVENT DETAILS

Tattva Bodha Part 1 meets six Thursdays: Jan 24–Feb 28

(Tattva Bodha Part 2 will meet six Thursdays: March 7–April 11. Subsequent module dates to be announced)

This year, the Center is offering an in-depth 1-year Vedanta study series with Gajananam. The course will be broken into smaller segments, meeting once a week for traditional study of Vedantic texts. Guidance for contemplation, meditation, and application in our lives will be presented. During the first 3 months, we will focus on the essential introductory text Tattva Bodha. Once completed, additional texts will be taken up.

The ancient Rishis or seers, delved into the depths of their being, and closely analyzed all of the layers of the human existence. In this process of self-inquiry, they discovered that in essence we are but pure consciousness, but various factors and conditioning cloud our vision and hide this truth. They laid out practices for clarifying our vision, so we too can access this first-hand knowledge. Yogic disciplines have been prescribed as preparatory practices, for purifying the heart and balancing the mind. For unveiling the deeper truths, the study of Vedanta has been prescribed.

Just as a map is necessary for reaching a destination, the teachings of Vedanta are the compass guiding the aspirant along the path of self-inquiry. Traditionally, Vedanta is studied by listening to the teachings from an experienced teacher, reflecting on them to help clarify our doubts, and meditating on these truths to enshrine them in our being.

Parts 1 and 2 of the series will focus on the text Tattva Bodha by Sri Adi Guru Sankaracharya, who is considered the greatest teacher of Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism) that history has seen. He lovingly answers many essential questions and introduces aspiring students to the basic principles of Vedanta. This preliminary text is presented in the form of a dialogue between the Guru and the disciple. The disciple asks with genuine eagerness and the Guru answers with patience, depth and precision.

We are looking forward to this wonderful and rare opportunity of offering a methodical study of Vedanta at our center. It will include a thorough introduction to the principles of Advaita Vedanta, and should be a good stepping stone for those interested in gaining an understanding of and pursuing the path of Self-inquiry.

Required text for Parts 1 and 2 – Tattva Bodha of Adi Guru Sankaracharya, available at the Center’s boutique.

No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

He began his training in the late ’80s at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in Tel Aviv, and became a Sivananda yoga instructor in 1989. In the ’90s, he served as a staff member and director of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in New York and has taught at many Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training Courses and retreats. Due to his love for chanting Kirtan, mantras and slokas, which have a wonderful uplifting vibration, with the desire to pronounce these more accurately as well as deepen his understanding of the mantras and ancient scriptures, Gajananam studied Sanskrit under the tutelage of the Sanskrit Scholar Dr. Sarasvati Mohan from 2004 through 2012. He is an excellent teacher of Bhagavad Gita and Sanskrit. Gajananam has had the opportuniy of studying Vedantic scriptures in a traditional manner at Arsha Vidya since 2013.
