Unique Surfaces - A Collage

Exhibit dates: February 5 - March 2, 2014

Opening Night: 6-9 p | February 14

The medium of collage is the medium for deconstruction and transformation.

Collage is at the core of Modern Art: from Cubism to present day. This folk technique is most associated with Picasso and Braque who brought it into the mainstream as a new art form. Their inclusions of newspaper, rope, cloth and wallpaper into their paintings shocked the public 100 years ago.

Yet, collage and assemblage are as relevant and aesthetically inspirational today as they were then. Artists have continued to combine ever-new techniques and materials to extend collage into 3-D works and monumental installations.

With collage, an artist claims existing objects into his artwork, sometimes utilizing the objects’ original meaning and purpose, and more often, deconstructing the original meaning and transforming it into a new narrative. What evolves is a brand new image, concept, and object which exposes a part of the history of the original elements revealed anew through the artist’s hand.

"...the principle of collage is the central principle of all art in the 20th century." ~ Donald Barthelme

Exhibiting Artists:

Beka Brayer, Gary Comoglio, Andy Fuller, John Hundt, Howie Katz, Hope Kroll, Leonidas Kyriakopoulos, Paige LaBrie, Jaime Longa, Vanessa Marsh, Katie McCann, Darla McKenna, John McNamara, Beth Mullins, Carrie Ann Plank, Sylvia Solochek Walters, Leah Virsik, Stephen C. Wagner
