Friday and Saturday, February 2 and 3 at 8 pm
In celebration of a half-century in the performing arts, San Francisco-based, actor, activist and author Danny Glover, stage actress Rhodessa Jones, and musician/composer Idris Ackamoor, salute Black History Month with two performances of the Underground Jazz Cabaret at The Lab. The performances celebrate the recent release of Afro Futuristic Dreams (Strut Records, 2023) featuring the compositions and music of Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of The Pyramids. For the Underground Jazz Cabaret, The Pyramids will include co-founder Margaux Simmons and a full seven-piece band augmented with string quartet and a horn section.
The evening features new and existing work created and performed by the artists in collaboration and individually. Live music is designed to be the thread that connects stories and culture ranging from the Middle Passage to contemporary reflections and aspirations for the future. Afro Futuristic Dreams pays homage to the Afrofuturism movement that has embraced science-fiction writers Octavia Butler and Samuel R. Delany and musician Sun Ra. Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids are celebrated as progenitors and innovators of Afrofuturism in jazz and performances for five decades.
$25-$60.
Presented by Cultural Odyssey.
