July 12, 13, 14 - Fri & Sat 7:30pm, Sun 12pm
Celebrating over two decades of dancemaking in the Bay Area, dNaga Dance Co., founded and directed by Claudine Naganuma, presents Unbound, at the Dresher Ensemble Studio in West Oakland, July 12-14th, 2024.
Unbound explores ideas around anti-Asian violence through dance. Alongside radical community projects such as the GIRL Project and her regular work as a Dance for PD(R) instructor (Parkinson's), Ms. Naganuma and dNaga invite audiences to catch the first glimpse of this brand new work, which explores Inter generational healing by unpacking the origins of anti-Asian violence through poignant narratives of incarceration of Americans from the Asian diaspora, patriarchy, and the modern-day repercussions of racist legislation. Unbound will tour to the Mondavi Center at UC Davis in October 2024.
Unbound promises to be a captivating journey through the intersections of culture, heritage, and contemporary society. Unbound is a reflection of resilience and a testament to the strength of the Asian community in America. Inspired by the recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination, this production challenges audiences to confront the realities of systemic racism.
While grappling with the intensity of these past and present injustice, Unbound also delves into trajectories of hope through themes of unity and care, drawing inspiration from figures like Yuri Kochiyama and examining the practices that propel us towards collective liberation. Amidst a world of uncertainty and trauma, Unbound offers a space for introspection and healing through the medium of dance.
Unbound at the Dresher Ensemble Studio is sponsored by the Anti-Asian Violence: Origins and Trajectories Research Initiative (AAVOT) led by Leti Volpp, Susette Min, Laura Kang, and Lee Ann Wang. This research initiative has been generously funded by the University of California Research Grants Program Office.
$20-25.
