For Ume, music is the embodiment of contradiction. The Austin band's powerful rock songs contain a multitude of opposing juxtapositions, balancing elegance with brutality, strength with fragility, ferocious metal and sweet melody. These paradoxes resound through the trio's new album, "Monuments," a collection of songs that reimagine heavy music and is as beautiful as it is massive. When the musicians began writing for the album, after touring over 200 dates in support of their acclaimed debut "Phantoms," the emphasis was on translating the impassioned force of Ume's momentous live show onto a recording. Rarely has the platform for women in rock been updated as authoritatively as it has been with this band and this new album.
Since welcoming new powerhouse drummer Rachel Fuhrer, the band has shared the stage with The Smashing Pumpkins, Warpaint, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Franz Ferdinand, Helmet, Wu-Tang, and Foals, and were personally called by Perry Farrell to open for Jane's Addiction at their Lollapalooza afterparty. Ume appeared on the 2012 Season Premiere of "No Reservations" with Anthony Bourdain, who celebrated the band as "a shitload of rawk in a tiny little room" before taking them to dinner during SXSW. The band's name -- pronounced "ooo-may" -- was taken from a Japanese plum blossom that they later learned symbolizes perseverance and devotion, a moniker that aptly reflects the musicians' tenacity and passion.

Black Map. A clean slate, an open-ended set of directions with no boundaries or guidelines tying you to any predetermined path? Or a bleak, morbid symbol of nothing-good-to-come, no matter which journey you choose? Maybe a little bit of both? Dystopian themes and dark lyrical images sit atop bombastic, surging rhythms and melodies - suggesting all paths are possible, but you may lose a few things along the way. This is Black Map. Mark Engles (guitar). Ben Flanagan (vocals, bass). Chris Robyn (drums).
Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Black Map is a perfect sonic intersection of its members' pasts. In 2010, Ben Flanagan found his anthem-heavy pop band The Trophy Fire taking some time off from the road, and simultaneously found himself becoming fast friends with Mark Engles of the internationally popular experimental art rock band, Dredg. It wasn't long before Flanagan was touring the world with Dredg as a side guitarist/vocalist. The two friends became inseparable, sharing their affinity for 90s rock bands that melded the heavy and the beautiful, such as Northern California cult icons, Far - which just so happened to be the former band of their friend, Chris Robyn. With Far as a major influence, Engles and Flanagan began writing the heaviest, most powerful music they could muster - while still keeping the strong sense of melody their other projects are known for. The duo took some of their early ideas to Robyn and when the three men began playing music together in the same room, the synergy and spark was instantaneous.
With the touring schedule for Dredg not nearly as busy as in the past, and with Robyn stepping down as a touring member of Crosses (side project of Chino Moreno of Deftones and Shaun Lopez of Far), Black Map was able to find time to record their forthcoming "Driver EP" (out Feb 25), and will hit the road in 2014. The group unceremoniously released their debut single "I'm Just The Driver" on YouTube in November to overwhelming response, and were soon featured on BBC Radio 1's "Rock Show" best tracks of 2013. Before we get ahead of ourselves, One Hundred Percent has always been a loud-as-Hell rock band. Graduating from Bay Area acts like The Creeps and Switchblade Riot, it's no surprise that the three members of San Francisco's latest buzz-worthy band will bring the noise. Yet, just being loud is only half the story. What they don't tell you is just how solid One Hundred Percent is at the heavy, guitar driven, and intensely layered indie rock which they do in fact bring. In one motion, One Hundred Percent can bring up a soaring and hazily sky written shoegaze melody that seamlessly morphs into a searing blitz attack of post-punk percussion, and finally clocks in with a devastating Sonic Youth-esqe freakout. Since early 2012, the band has been not so quietly perfecting their evocative concoction in and around the city. Now, that noise pays off in the form of their debut LP, All Teeth and Nails, set for release this fall on San Francisco's increasingly addictive 20 Sided Records.
