True Blue Mirror: Ellen Berkenblit and Sarah Braman

The McEvoy Foundation for the Arts presents True Blue Mirror: Ellen Berkenblit and Sarah Braman, on view from February 8 - May 4, 2019. An artists' talk with Berkenblit and Braman followed by an opening reception is free to the public on Saturday, February 9, 3:30-8pm.
In this premiere Bay Area exhibition for both artists, curator Kevin Moore stages a theatrical dialogue between Berkenblit's gestural semi-abstract Pop Art paintings and the historic Constructivism of Braman's blocky, quasi-mystical sculptures and environments. Juxtaposing Braman's sculptural animation of vernacular materials - camper shells, chairs, wallpaper - and Berkenblit's boldly realized, often recurring cast of characters reveals correspondences in line, color, and composition, yet differences in scale and dimensionality as reflected and refracted through the vision of the other. What results is an impromptu stage production of sorts, engaging Braman as set designer and Berkenblit as casting director.
Taking its title from one of Berkenblit's works, Moore says of the exhibition's theme: "True Blue Mirror suggests reflection: both a literal reflection, as a mirror does, but also as a means of introspection. It's intriguing that these two artists, working in different mediums and meeting in person for the first time to formulate this show, have so much in common in terms of color palette and they also work from a very interior place: two private worlds that look alike, "reflecting" each other, yet imperfectly as mirrors do."
Furthering MFA's continued growth as a place of exploration for artists and visitors alike and expanding the emphasis on the visual conversation in play between the artists, the exhibition is complemented by an auxiliary installation of works from the McEvoy Family Collection selected by Berkenblit and Braman.
