World beat is quietly taking over indie rock. Tune-Yards, Yeasayer and Dirty Projectors can attest to that. Despite those bands' rich global influences, they stick strictly to English. Oakland's Trails and Ways not only fuse infectious bossa nova beats and flamenco guitars with intimate bedroom synth-pop-they do it in Portuguese, Spanish and English. (And they fittingly titled their debut EP Trilingual.) Their songs have the light, feel-good quality of new indie-electro bands like HAIM, but mix it together with a vibrant worldly flair. They even recorded a Portuguese-English rendition of Frank Ocean's "Lost" that is a lush, grooving dream-pop gem. (KF)
