Town Hall: Sexual Harassment (and what we can do about it.)

SEE EVENT DETAILS

It seems like every day there is another company mired in another scandal. This town hall is for anyone who's asked themselves, "What can I do??"
Speaking up on an intimate topic like sexual harassment is scary, especially when complex power dynamics are involved. As women, we're often told we're being too sensitive, that boys will be boys, or it's just "locker room talk." Fear of being accused of overreacting, or of going up against powerful people at our companies often stop us from speaking up when we should.
While we're glad to see thought leaders like Reed Hoffman speak up, change will ultimately come from women speaking up. We need to arm individuals - and not just our CEO's - with the education and tools to ensure this behavior will not continue.
So what can we actually do? This town hall will be a safe space to speak up in a guided conversation led by experts in workplace harassment will help us take action. It will be part story sharing, panel and breakouts with the intention of creating a manifest and action plan we can take with us to the office.

Key takeaways:

How to identify what is sexual harassment
Your legal options
What to do if you find yourself in a compromising situation
How to get your company to implement sexual harassment training
Who to go to if you experience harassment
How to respond if you receive a complaint

Featured speakers:

Janine Yancey is the founder and CEO of Emtrain, an online education company that serves up HR and compliance content and analytics to create healthier organizations. Janine has been certified by both Federal and California courts as an expert in harassment training and investigations — she’s provided expert testimony on both topics. As a harassment investigator, Janine investigated allegations of harassment and misconduct within former Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown’s office. Janine has served as employment law counsel to many Bay Area technology companies, including Google. She also authored The HR Handbook to help young technology companies successfully navigate workplace laws.
Rachel Williams is the the Head of Corporate Recruiting, Diversity & Inclusion at Yelp.  With more than 15 years of human resources experience in a variety of industries including technology, life sciences, consumer products and retail, Rachel has honed her expertise in recruitment, organizational development, and strategic change activities. She has also held talent acquisition roles at SolarCity, Peet's Coffee & Tea as well as an executive search consultant for venture capitalists.
Patti Perez is an employment lawyer, dedicated exclusively to conflict resolution and conflict avoidance in the workplace. Her conflict resolution practice involves helping companies find solutions during moments of crisis. This includes conducting independent workplace investigations (she has conducted in excess of 1,200 investigations) and providing consulting services on complex issues including disability and pregnancy accommodations, and issues related to gender identity issues, among others. Her conflict avoidance work includes a robust training practice, as well as the design and execution of numerous proactive programs that help companies become employers of choice.
