Minnesota Street Project Foundation is honored to announce the opening of California Black Voices Project grantee Toni Scott's The Measure of Things: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The exhibition will be presented at 1275 Minnesota Street Project in the Atrium and on Adjacent, the Project's virtual space for art.
The Measure of Things: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings memorializes Black lives lost unjustly and addresses systemic racism in the United States of America. The installation takes the form of a suspended canoe from which hangs measuring tapes extended with a chain and bell. A charred black bark mound is placed underneath each tape, representing the deceased. The work also includes dozens of cage sculptures dotted throughout the Atrium.
