Tomfoolery - The Wicked Words and Mischievous Music of Tom Lehrer

SEE EVENT DETAILS
In the 1950s and 1960s, Tom Lehrer epitomized the developing era of modern satirical humor, writing songs which were wickedly naughty yet not x-rated by today's standards in any way. What is most amazing about Lehrer's music is how timeless it has remained, dealing with subjects such as religion, love, pollution and nuclear weapons without in any way dating the material. Turned into a musical revue by Cameron Mackintosh, the producing genius behind Cats and Phantom of the Opera,  Tomfoolery is still one of the most bitingly hilarious two hours of music you will ever hear. A cast of six will sing and act out Tom's music and send you home from San Francisco's Shelton Theater with a smile on your face and at least a couple of thoughts rattling around in your brain. Lehrer may have decided to retire from songwriting (as is rumored) "when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize," but his musical humor remains as a legacy for all of us today.
A remount of Landmark Musical Theatre's inaugural production in 2015 at the Gateway Theatre, the show features Tara DeMoulin, Frank Gallo, Rachel Perkins, Jepoy Ramos, Len Shaffer and Nicole Thordsen, six diverse local musical theatre artists, who will sing, dance and jibe Tom's comic introductory lines. The show is directed by Landmark artistic director Jonathan Rosen, who also directed its most recent production The Fantasticks, as well as last year's acclaimed and TBA-award winning production of HAiR.  Gary Stanford Jr. handles the choreography as he did for this year's The Fantasticks.
WEDNESDAY EVENING AND FRIDAY MIDNIGHT PERFORMANCES will be special "SING-ALONG" PERFORMANCES in which the audience will be invited to sing along with the cast of the show for some of the musical numbers.  Lyric sheets will be available for those who do not remember the lyrics.  (The sing-along shows that we did in 2015 were terrific fun for the cast members and the audience.)
SATURDAY AFTERNOON on AUGUST 4 and SUNDAY AFTERNOON on AUGUST 12 will be special TALKBACK PERFORMANCES where you will be able to talk with and question the cast and staff about creation of this work, and about the music and humor that is contained in it.
