TIDES October: A Night of Women In Music & Visual Art

SEE EVENT DETAILS
TIDES is a party dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the work of women and nonbinary folks working in music, visual art, and other media. Our next event is on Wednesday, October 24th, at El Rio. Come celebrate and get spooky with us!Each installment of TIDES features a full lineup of music, as well as a mini-marketplace of visual artists on the back patio. Every event also raises money for a different nonprofit working in women's rights -- with a focus on issues that affect the trans, WOC, and LGBTQ communities -- so a portion of proceeds goes to organizations fighting the good fight. This month we're fundraising for Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA), an organization that provides support for Latina immigrants in the Bay Area.
MUSICAL ARTISTSGirl Swallows NightingaleGirl Swallows Nightingale was hatched when Marica Petrey wrote too much music for one of her fantasy film projects and made it the perfect excuse to start a band. With songwriting inspired by Japanese folklore, anime, science fiction, and epic saga, GSN conjures a cinematic experience, painting a vivid musical canvas that shifts its colors between modern rock, jazz, theater, funk, and pop, to underwater sound scapes and dreams of outer space. The Old Grey Whistle TestThe Old Grey Whistle Test is the pseudonym for the solo musical musings of San Francisco-based vocalist, songwriter, and frontwoman Tracey Holland. Described as something of a "beaker-full of Nancy Sinatra-noir, Linda Perhacs' psychedelia, Stevie Nicks-mysticism, and Kate Bush-esque power set to a score of Ennio Morricone", the resulting collection of songs on OGWT's debut, Ouroboros, is a small treasure trove of richness. Both personal and cryptic, Ouroboros is Holland's debut record as a solo artist (she's normally one-half of SF-based rock/soul outfit Vandella), released in May 2016 and celebrated accordingly with a sold-out staged funeral for a release show. AngelicaGarcia24-year-old Angelica Garcia lends her astonishing voice to her poetically woven musings and statements of intent; in a time when music should stand up and isn’t, she’s an old head on young shoulders and a total anomaly. The first fruits of her labor, the single ‘Karma The Knife,” drifted out recently winning over people drawn to her beat-driven, sharp, and persistently melodic pop music. An album is close to completion and is expected early 2019.
